Music is a medium that transcends cultural and economic divides; it is a global language that has the power to connect people irrespective of background. It is also a potent catalyst for social change. As such it is intrinsic to our initiatives.

Poo Productions set up a record label to represent Mozambique's number one band Massukos and the UK group Empty Boat, who are linked through the water and sanitation music initiatives they have been involved with. In 2007, we released Bumping by Massukos, which went to #6 in the European World Music Charts; on World Toilet Day (19 November) 2008, we will be releasing Waitless by Empty Boat.

Unlike most record deals we strive for fairness with regard to distribution of profits. As such we run our label on a Fair Trade partnership agreement whereby profits are shared 50:50 and all band members benefit. We try and keep all associated production costs to the minimum without sacrificing quality or the musical aspirations and ambitions of the artist.

Our connection with Massukos and Empty Boat began in 2004, when in association with WaterAid, we organized a combined music tour in northern Mozambique. The objective was to make a documentary film (The Mozambique Poo Tour) and highlight, through music, vital life-saving messages about the importance of simple hygiene practices. The theme of the tour was "wash your hands for good health", forming part of a national campaign launched by Estamos (a WaterAid and Oxfam partner in Mozambique).
